First, I would say the character. The arch-villain Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes has been described as an enemy of the great detective. However, the character has actually that appears in two of the many stories, "The Final Problem" and "The Valley of Fear." It is mentioned in passing, usually as a reminiscence Holmes in five others.
